Abstract

Hexafluorobenzene and fluorochlorobenzenes containing 5 or 4 fluorine atoms in the molecule are prepared by heating under reflux a mixture of fluorochlorobenzenes comprising trifluorotrichloro benzene and tetrafluorodichlorobenzene, or a mixture comprising trifluorotrichlorobenzene, tetrafluorodichlorobenzene and pentafluorochlorobenzene, with dry potassium fluoride in dry tetramethylene sulphone at 220-230 DEG C., the hexafluorobenzene and some of the pentafluorochlorobenzene being distilled out as they are formed and condensed, and fresh quantities of the starting mixture being added intermittently or continuously so that the hexafluorobenzene with some of the pentafluorochlorobenzene distil off without the temperature of the reaction mixture rising above 230 DEG C. or falling below 215 DEG C. The other fluorobenzenes are subsequently distilled out, condensed and fractionally distilled.
