Abstract

Tobacco is treated by mixing therewith a zirconium substance, preferably selected from elemental zirconium, the oxides, hydroxides, carbides, silicates, carbonates, phosphates, sulphates, and salts of organic acids of zirconium. The zirconium substance may be applied as a powder or sprayed on the tobacco in solution and the solvent evaporated. Quantitative examples are given.
