Abstract

1,070,311. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Oct. 8, 1963 [Oct. 11, 1962], No. 38499/62. Headings F2E and F2F. In an hydraulic braking system, a disc brake is provided with friction pads 13, 17 adapted to be applied to opposite sides of a rotatable brake disc 10, the friction pads being mounted in a caliper 11 which is pivoted at 12 and each friction pad is applied to the disc by a piston 15, 19 working in an hydraulic cylinder 16, 21, the two cylinders 16, 21 being, connected by separate hydraulic circuits to a tandem master cylinder. In-the event of failure of one circuit, a friction pad will be applied to the disc and the reaction on the caliper will urge the other friction pad into contact with the disc. As shown, one hydraulic cylinder (16) is of smaller diameter and an automatic adjuster (not shown ) is provided between the piston 19 operating in the larger cylinder and the friction pad 17 which it actuates. Instead of the caliper being allowed to float, the caliper may be fixed and the disc may be allowed to float axially.
