Abstract

An aqueous disinfectant composition, suitable for use in dairies and breweries, comprises (i) from 1 to 1000 parts per million of a biocidal agent which is an n-alkyl quaternary ammonium halide compound and (ii) an anti-foaming agent which is a dimethylpolysiloxane and which is present in an amount from 0.12% to 0.36% by volume of the volume of the biocidal agent. The quaternary compound may be an n-alkyl di-R benzyl ammonium halide, or an n-alkyl R isoquinolium halide, in which the n-alkyl constituent is C12, C14, C16 or C18, R is methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl and the halide is an iodide, bromide or chloride; the benzyl group may carry one or more lower alkyl substituents. The composition may also contain a cationic, non-ionic or amphoteric surface active agent, or mixtures thereof, and a buffering agent present in an amount sufficient to maintain the pH of the composition from 7.2 to 13.0. Surface-active agents mentioned are alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanols, fatty acid substituted alkanolamides, alcohol amines (e.g. triethanolamine), substituted polyethylene glycol fatty esters (e.g. methoxy polyethylene glycol fatty ester), ethylene oxide condensates, coco trimethyl ammonium chloride, and condensation products of acrylic monomers with fatty primary amines (i.e. n-fatty beta aminopropionates RCH2NHCH2CH2COOX and n-fatty beta iminodipropionates RCH2N(CH2CH2COOX)2 R being a long chain hydrocarbon radical derived from a fatty acid and X being a salt-forming cation or hydrogen). Suitable buffering agents include sodium or potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, borax, trisodium phosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium tetra-, hexameta- or tripoly-phosphate and triethanolamine. In examples, the disinfectant composition comprises n-(C12, C14, C16 and C18)-alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, n - (C12, C14, C16 and C18) - alkyl dimethyl ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, dimethylpolysiloxane and water, with or without n-lauryl myristyl beta-aminopropionic acid, "Sterox NJ" (Registered Trade Mark) (alkyl aryl polyoxyethylene ether of ethylene oxidenonyl phenol condensate) and triethanolamine.ALSO:An aqueous disinfectant composition, suitable for use in swimming pools, oil wells, dairies and breweries, comprises (i) from 1 to 1000 parts per million of a biocidal agent which is an n-alkyl quaternary ammonium halide compound and (ii) an anti-foaming agent which is a dimethylpolysiloxane and which is present in an amount of from 0.12% to 0.36% by volume of the volume of the biocidal agent. Suitable buffering agents include sodium or potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, borax, trisodium phosphate, tetra-sodium pyrophosphate, sodium tetra-, hexameta- or tripoly-phosphate and triethanolamine. In examples, the disinfectant composition comprises n-(C12, C14, C16 and C18)-alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, n-(C12, C14, C16 and C18)-alkyl dimethyl ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, dimethylpolysiloxane and water, with or without n-lauryl myristyl b -aminopropionic acid, Sterox NJ (registered Trade Mark) (alkyl aryl polyoxyethylene ether of ethylene oxide-nonyl phenol condensate) and triethanolamine.
