Abstract
Textile fibres are modified by repeatedly forcing back and forth therethrough a solution or dispersion containing an ethylenically unsaturated compound and a catalyst for the polymerization thereof, e.g. a peroxide, and azo compound or a redox polymerization system. Specified fibres are those of keratin (wool), cotton, rayon and cellulose acetate. Preferred ethylenic compounds are unsaturated mono- and di-carboxylic acids and esters, amides and nitriles thereof, vinyl aromatic compounds, vinyl and vinylidene halides, vinyl ketones, esters of unsaturated alcohols and vinyl heterocyclic compounds, specific compounds of these types being listed. The examples describe forcing back and forth through wool and cotton fibres aqueous liquids containing iron salt/hydrogen peroxide redox catalysts and: (1 and 2) acrylonitrile, (3 and 4) styrene and butyl acrylate, (5) acrylic acid, (6) 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, styrene and dibutyl maleate, and (7) methyl acrylate. The modified fibres of Example (5) are dyeable.
