Abstract
<PICT:1066690/C3/1> A process for homogeneously mixing a plurality of materials, reactive with each other, comprising collagen and at least one other component which is normally liquid, comprises the steps of separately freezing at least said one component so that said plurality of materials are in an inactive form and in the form of free-flowing particles, mixing said plurality of materials until a uniform mixture is obtained and then thawing to permit the intermixed materials to interact and form a homogeneous composition. Preferably, the plurality of free-flowing particles is continuously mixed during the thawing step. The term "reactive" includes both chemical and physical actions occurring when two or more materials are brought together, e.g. the swelling of collagen when in contact with acid, base or salt, which is primarily a physical phenomenon, and also the effect of a tanning agent on collagen which is primarily a chemical phenomenon. In a preferred embodiment, the first of the plurality of materials is collagen, the second is a swelling agent solution and the third is a shrink inhibiting additive. Specified swelling agents include dilute acids, dilute alkalis and salts, especially dilute hydrochloric, lactic and acetic acids. Preferably, the resultant additive-collagen-swelling agent blend contains from 10 to 35% per weight additive based on the dry weight of collagen. Examples describe the preparation of tubular sausage casings.
