Abstract
Cycloalkyl aryl ketones are prepared by reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon and a cycloalkane carboxylic acid in the presence of polyphosphoric acid having a phosphoric anhydride content between 73 and 88% at a temperature at which the polyphosphoric acid is to some extent fluid and at a molar ratio between P2O5 and cycloalkane carboxylic acid of between 1 : 1 and 10:1. The cycloalkane ring may contain 4-12 carbon atoms, and may be alkyl-substituted. The aromatic hydrocarbon may be benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene or cumene. The reaction mass may be heated and extracted with the aromatic hydrocarbon, or the mass may be diluted with water then extracted. The polyphosphoric acid is recovered and may be recycled after its phosphoric anhydride content has been restored to the desired level. The examples describe the preparation of cyclohexyl - p - tolyl - ketone, cyclohexyl - phenyl - ketone, cyclohexyl - (2,5 - dimethyl - phenyl)-ketone, cyclohexyl - (4-ethyl-phenyl)-ketone, cyclohexyl - (2,4 - dimethyl - phenyl) - ketone, cyclohexyl - (4 - isopropyl - phenyl) - ketone, cyclooctyl - p - tolyl - ketone, and cyclododecyl-p-tolyl-ketone. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 940,255.
