Abstract
106,630. Fenchelle, H. E. March 24, 1916. Reversing; starting; stopping.-The engine is started in either direction by compressed air, some of the cylinders being fitted with valve mechanism to admit air to start it in one direction, while others have similar mechanism for starting in the reverse direction, liquid fuel being supplied simultaneously to those cylinders that are not being worked by compressed air. The invention is for cam mechanism A worked by a single handwheel B for controlling simultaneously the compressed air to the two groups of cylinders and the fuel, supplying the fuel in excess at starting and afterwards according to the speed desired. The cam is shown in the position for forward running at full speed. To stop the engine, the cam a<2> is brought beneath the lever F, which, through a spring e<2>, depresses the rod E and cuts off the fuel supply; the cams a, a<1> are also brought one on each side of levers d<1> for opening each of the compressed-air valves C respectively. The levers allow the cams to pass them, in stopping, without depressing the air valves. To start in a forward direction, the cams are turned in a clockwise direction; the cam a turns a lever d<1> and depresses the valve C, and simultaneously turns the lever D to engage the collar e on the rod E and supply an excess of fuel to some of the cylinders. By a further movement of the cams in the same direction, the air valve closes and the fuel supply is limited by the cam a<2>, and as the movement continues, the fuel supply increases until the camsurface a<2> no longer engages the lever F. The valve-gear is also adjusted for reversing by a pinion a<3> on the cam shaft and a rack H.
