An upright for supporting shelf brackets B comprises a hollow column C of box-like section with an open front and a slotted bracket holding plate or strip 12 received at the front of the column C, and includes spaced apart check plates 11a which may be parts of the column C or of the plate 12 and which serve to laterally support the rear of a bracket B held by the plate 12. In one embodiment (Fig. 1), the column C includes grooves 13 to receive a panel extending between adjacent uprights. Alternatively the panel may be located in an optional forward channel 11c. The plate 12 is received within inwardly facing grooves 14 in the column and includes vertically spaced slots 18 to selectively receive hooked ends of brackets B. In another embodiment (Fig. 4) the bracket is received within a channel 12c formed in the plate 12, the channel being extended by forwardly projecting webs 12b. Alternatively, (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) either the webs 12b or the channel 12c may be dispensed with. Other arrangements (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) provide two bracket receiving channels in the plate 12. In a further arrangement (Fig. 7), providing a deep channel 12c in the plate 12, a slotted bracket supporting insert strip 12p is held within a slot 12e provided at the rear of the channel 12c.
