Abstract

Finely divided unagglomerated carbonaceous magnetic pigments are produced by intimately mixing carbon black and compounds of Fe, Ni and/or Co and heating to decompose the compound (see Division C1). The pigments which are used in inks comprise carbon and 30-80% by weight of Fe, Ni and/or Co, the metal being intimately and permanently associated with the carbon, i.e. cannot be separated by physical means.ALSO:Finely divided carbonaceous magnetic pigments are produced by intimately mixing carbon black and compound(s) of iron, nickel and/or cobalt which decompose below 1600 DEG F. and preferably below 1292 DEG F., the proportions being 10-92% by weight of compound to 90-8% of carbon black for an inorganic compound and 10-98% by weight of compound to 90-2% of carbon black for an organic compound of the element, and then heating the mixture to a temperature of at least 932 DEG F. until the compound is decomposed leaving only the metal content thereof in the pigment product. The mixture may be heated to 932-1600 DEG F. in the absence of free oxygen, e.g. in a nitrogen atmosphere. The intimate mixing can be achieved by mixing carbon black with a solution of the compound and then spray-drying the resulting slurry. Suitable compounds are preferably soluble or dispersable in water or various organic solvents, e.g. ferric orthoarsenate, bromide fluoride chloride, orthophosphate, sulphide and sulphate, ferrous perchlorate, chloride, fluoride and iodide, cobaltous perchlorate, nitrate, chloride, iodide, iodate and selenate, cobalbic chloride, nickel hydroxide and selenate and the acetates, citrates, oxalates, formates, benzoates, carbonates, oleates and tartrates of iron, nickel and cobalt. The most preferred compound is ferric sulphate. The finely divided magnetic pigment comprises the intimate and permanent association, that is association in which the components cannot be separated by physical means, of carbon and 30-80% by weight of iron, cobalt and/or nickel.
