Abstract

A web of filaments or fibres is fed towards a row of hooked knitting needles (1) Figs. 1 to 5, not shown and as the web is advanced the edge portion containing a bundle of filaments or fibres is partially separated from the remainder and taken by the advanced needles by being pushed down on to the needle shanks by sinkers (7) so as to be received in the hooks of the needles as they are withdrawn. The needles can be devoid of means to close the books so that by their continuous reciprocation to receive the marginal portions of the advancing web the hooks become overloaded and eventually cast off a previous drawn bundle of filaments or fibres thereby forming a knitted mat of filamentary or fibrous material. The web is fed in an undulating manner formed by feeding it over parallel slots (5) the front edge of which may be recessed to permit the separation of the marginal bundle of filaments or fibres by co-operating sinker action. Alternatively a separator (6), Fig. 1, not shown, may be provided which cooperates with the sinkers to divide the marginal portion. A claw arrangement (8) serves to advance the web.
