Abstract
1,058,105. Folding newspapers; manufacturing books. R. LE POITTEVIN, and A. LE POITTEVIN. Aug. 4, 1964 [Feb. 6, 1964], No. 30958/64. Headings B6A and B6H. A machine for folding of printed newsprint webs in a concertina fashion comprises an arcuate guide member 1, Fig. 5, having a plurality of flexibly interconnected rollers the number of which corresponds to the number of longitudinal folds imparted to the web, a corresponding plurality of endless belts, tapes or wires 12 disposed above and below the web and adapted to form the longitudinal folds and a pair of endless guide belts 7,8 passing over terminal rollers 9, 10 and presser rollers 5, 6 to guide and flatten the concertina folded newsprint web. The machine is further provided with auxiliary rollers 11 which press the belts 7, 8 into the vertical to facilitate the folding and pressing of the progressively folded web. In another embodiment (Fig. 4) the endless belts 13 are replaced by preformed stationary rods 2 and 3. In a further embodiment adapted to fold precut pointed sheets the endless belts 13 are replaced by a corresponding plurality of flexible endless belts 14, Fig. 7, which are flat when passing over the guide member 1 but assume progressively the folded shape to be imparted to the sheets as they pass over dihedral rollers 15, the sheets passing between the superposed endless belts. The folded sheets or webs, the latter when cut, are interleaved and given a final median transverse fold (Fig. 2) in a conventional folder 17 and are deposited on an endless dispatch conveyer 18. Book manufacturing processes.-The folding machine may be applied to the manufacture of books whereby each precut and folded sheet forms a signature of which one series of folds is cut off by a trimmer the remaining folds being glued or stitched to form a volume. It may also be possible to cut off the folds on both sides and stitch or glue together the independent folios.
