Abstract
Green briquettes made of calcined char derived from coal and a bituminous binder are cured in a continuous (partial combustion) process at 400 DEG to 550 DEG F. (204 DEG to 288 DEG C.) by being passed downwardly through a reactor in countercurrent to an air stream which contains particulate heat transfer solids, e.g. calcined char, sand or other minerals. The solids are recycled through a cooling device, and the flow rates of the solids and of the briquettes are controlled to ensure at least 10% by volume oxygen (on a solids free basis) in the top of the reactor where the hot briquettes enter. The temperature difference between the inlet and exit ends of the reactor should not exceed 60 DEG F. (in a specific example the inlet temperature was 430 DEG F., the outlet 400 DEG F.), and preferred residence times in the reactor are 1 to 2 hours. The cooling device for the solids may employ direct cooling by air or water, or indirect cooling. The cured briquettes may be subsequently coked.
