Abstract
4-N-dimethylaminocatechol is prepared by methylation of 4-aminoveratrole with dimethyl sulphate, 4-N-dimethylaminoveratrole M.P. 38 -40 DEG C. being extracted with ether and then refluxed with hydrobromic acid followed by evaporation and trituration with acetone. The hydrobromide of 4-N-dimethylaminocatechol M.P. 121-3 DEG C. is obtained. Other acid addition salts, e.g. the chlorides and sulphates are referred to.ALSO:The invention provides compositions and a process for dyeing hair and heratinous materials in which aqueous compositions containing 4-N-dimethylaminocatechol, 4-N-dimethylamino-2-hydroxyaniline, the acid addition salts thereof, separately or in admixture are used, the aqueous compositions also may contain a surface active agent, a thickener, a solvent, a perfume, a preservative, an antixidant or apH stabilizer. Preferably the dye forming compound is present in a concentration of 0.005m to 0.5m.
