Abstract
Compounds of the general formula <FORM:1055060/C2/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 each represent hydrogen atoms or C1-6 alkyl radicals, are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:1055060/C2/2> with hydrogen cyanide at a temperature above 30 DEG C. The starting materials of Formula II above may be prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula <FORM:1055060/C2/3> with hydrogen cyanide and the subsequent conversion to compounds of Formula I may be conducted with or without isolation of the compounds of Formula III. In Example 1, a -hydroxygluteronitrile is hydrolysed with hydrochloric acid to give g -butyrolactone carboxylic acid.
