Abstract
1,053,282. Seaming non-metallic sheet material; laminates. LINDSAY WIRE WEAVING CO. May 20, 1963 [May 18, 1962], No. 20039/63. Headings B5K and B5N. [Also in Division D1] A non-woven, porous, endless belt, e.g. the Fourdrinier belt in a paper-making machine, comprises at least two superposed filter layers one of which is formed by parallel, thermoplastic, monofilament strands extending longitudinally of the belt and the other by such strands extending transversely at an angle thereto. Each strand is of non-circular cross-section, Figs. 14-34 (not shown), and is independently twisted about its axis and heat-set, adjacent strands in each layer being similarly or oppositely so twisted, and the strands are joined (by solvent cement, adhesive or fusion effected with or by heat and/or pressure) at their areas of contact to form longitudinally extending rows of spaced openings therebetween. Alternate similarly twisted strands of a layer may be shifted longitudinally with respect to intermediate layers, Fig. 7 (not shown), or the relative pitch of the strand may be varied to provide and/or modify the openings. In one or more layers, thermoplastic, twisted or non- twisted monofilaments 19, which may be of smaller cross-section than the filter strands, may be disposed between and extend parallel thereto so as to overlie (and perhaps adjust the dimensions of) the spaced openings. The strands may be mechanically reinforced by longitudinal or transverse strands 13, e.g. metal wire or glass, Figs. 11-13 (not shown), which may contain filler material such as glass flake. The joins between the ends of each of the strands are staggered along the length of the belt. Thermoplastic strand materials may be cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetatebutyrate, polystyrene, polyethylene, polycarbonate, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl esters, vinylidene chloride, styrene acrylonitrile, styrene butadiene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylene, acrylonitrile resin rubber, nylon, methyl methacrylate, ethyl cellulose. The strand layers, before or after formation into belt, may be hot-stretched to molecularly orient the strands, Figs. 36-38 (not shown).
