Abstract
1,050,148. Lithiated clay. GENERAL MILLS Inc. May 25, 1964 [Feb. 10, 1964], No. 21512/64. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions B1 and C2] Lithium stabilized clay, used as a catalyst for polymerizing unsaturated higher fatty acids (see Division C2), is prepared by adding a lithium compound, e.g. a soluble salt to a clay such as naturally occurring bentonite or montmorillonite clays, or by replacing or exchanging in part the potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium cations present in the clay. The latter method may use an acid form of an insoluble ion-exchange resin, or the clay may be treated by a dilute solution of a mineral acid, e.g. hydrochloric or sulphuric followed by neutralization with lithium hydroxide or bicarbonate. Lithium salts mentioned are halides, acetates, propionate, caproate and stearate, and carbonate, and hydroxide which may form the salts in situ.
