A screw for a pug mill or extrusion machine has an interrupted thread 2 the two parts of which overlap at the interruption by an amount, measured in the direction G of the helix angle Ï, at least equal to the gap with s divided by tan Ï, so that in a projection viewed in the direction of the plane 4 normal to the axis of the screw the two thread parts meet without leaving a gap, or overlap. The overlapping parts of the thread may be parallel or slightly convergent or divergent. There may be more than one such interruption in the thread of a single start screw or in each thread of a multi-start screw.
