Abstract

1,047,166. Crimping yarns and fibres. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. July 3, 1963 [July 3, 1962], No. 26348/63. Heading D1F. [Also in Divisions A2 and B5] A filamentary strand is crimped by continuously forcing a filamentary strand by frictional engagement with a continuously rotating surface 13 into a zone constricted in the direction of the strand thickness against an impedance at the exit from said zone afforded by frictional engagement with a second such surface 15, surface 13 moving at a speed greater by a predetermined amount surface 15, the path of the strand in the zone being inclined to the line of centres of the rotating surfaces. The filamentary strand may be a yarn, tow, sliver, or roving, of cellulose triacetate, secondary cellulose acetate, nylon, a polyester, a nitrile, an acrylic, or a vinylidene polymer or copolymer. The crimping chamber is formed by plates 14,16 supported between rolls 13, 15 in slits in side plates. Plate 16 has a piston-cylinder, mounted (Fig. 3 (not shown)), for easy removable into a retracted position while the positions of both plates may be adjusted by bolts. Rolls 13, 15 are preferably rubber covered, but they may have a rigid surface in which case they should be spring mounted. Alternatively the crimping chamber may be formed by roll 15 and plate 16. In one example a tow of cellulose triacetate filaments from a wet spinning column (see Division B5) is pretreated by, for example, steam and is then crimped. The crimped tow is set by saturated steam at 212-300‹F., is opened by rolls, with the lower rolls smooth and the upper rolls helically grooved, and stapled. The staple fibres are formed into a yarn which, on passing through boiling water, is formed into a bulky product. Alternatively, to form cigarette filters (see Division A2), the opened tow may be plasticized with 7% of its weight of glycerol triacetate, and condensed into a narrow bundle which is wrapped in paper and cut into plugs. It is stated that by using this crimping apparatus yarn having 50 crimps/inch and tow having 25 crimps/inch may be obtained.
