Abstract
In the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene, ethylbenzene is separated from the product stream also containing steam by compressing the mixture so that the minimum condensation temperature of the steam is 210-240 DEG F., using the compressed mixture to heat the reboiler of an ethylbenzene distillation column by condensing steam and distilling the mixture in the column to obtain ethylbenzene overhead. The compression is preferably effected by a steam turbine driven by highpressure steam which is then superheated and mixed with feed ethylbenzene for the dehydrogenation. The reaction effluent is compressed by at least 2 p.s.i.a. to 20-32 p.s.i.a. to provide a steam condensation temperature of at least 5 DEG F., preferably 10 DEG F., above the column bottoms temperature. Part of the compressed mixture is also used to heat the reboiler of a light ends column and condensates and vapours from the reboilers are condensed and distilled. The ethylbenzene column having 60-80 plates is operated at an overhead pressure of not below 10 mm. Hg, e.g. 25 mm.
