In a device for limiting the travel of cable from a winch drum 29, Fig. 2, a pneumatic clutch L is automatically disengaged under the control of a two-way valve C actuated by a nut 35 on a screw-thread 34 geared to the drum 29. The valve C controls relay valves D, F, associated with the clutch L and with a cylinder K for simultaneously engaging the brake when the clutch is disengaged. A push-button valve 6 is provided for releasing the brake when the manual control H is isolated by the relay valve F.
