Abstract

1,040,768. Cutting by lasers. HEAD, WRIGHTSON & CO. Ltd. Jan. 21, 1965 [Oct. 22, 1963], No. 41655/63. Heading B3V. A continuously moving metal sheet, tube, bar, strip or the like 2 is cut by a laser beam which, during cutting, moves at the same speed as the metal. The latter may be conveyed by a feed and levelling device 3 driven by a motor 4 through variable-speed gear-box 5 and gear-box 11. The laser device 6 produces a thin planar beam and is pivoted at 8 for rocking movement during cutting by linkage 7, 8 and variable radius crank 10 driven from the gear-box 11. Alternatively the laser device may move bodily during cutting. Supports 1 are provided for the metal 2 and shielding means 12 move into the path of the beam when no material is present. A heat sink 13 comprises a tank of liquid 13 which may be particles suspended in water; alternatively flowing liquid may be used. The liquid is opaque to the light produced by the laser. A number of laser units mounted side by side may be used to make straight or profiled cuts. The laser device may be mounted below the metal to be cut.
