Abstract

583,092. Folding bayonets for smallarms. PATCHETT, G. W., and STERLING ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. March 13, 1944, No. 4639. [Class 119] A folding bayonet 8 for smallarms is freely hinged by a bolt 9 in lugs 6 of a clip 5 attached to the gun muzzle. In its folded position, the shoulder 10 of the bayonet engages a spring- loaded pusher 14 attached to the barrel casing 4. The bayonet is retained in its folded position by a spring-loaded catch 20 operated by a thumb lever 24, and on releasing this catch, is swung about the pivot 9 by the impulse of the pusher 14, into its operative position where it is retained by a spring catch consisting of a spring-loaded plunger 11 housed in the shoulder of the bayonet and engaging a slot 3a formed in a collar 2 surrounding the gun barrel at the muzzle. The bayonet may be released by withdrawing the plunger 11 by means of the knob 12. Construction of pusher 14, mechanism and spring catch 24 are described in detail. Finger guard provided between point of bayonet when folded and thumb release lever.
