Abstract

The subject matter of the present invention is a process for preparing alkyltetrazenes of formula (I) in which one of the radicals R1 or R2 is hydrogen or a linear or branched alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, while the other of said radicals R1 or R2 is, without distinction, a linear or branched alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; some of said alkyltetrazenes, in particular (E)- 1,1,4,4-tetramethyl-2-tetrazene (TMT), are advantageous candidates for propulsion. This process comprises: oxidation of a hydrazine, of formula (II) in which R1 and R2 are as defined above, with monochloramine, said oxidation being carried out in an aqueous medium at a pH of between 9 and 12.5; recovery of the organic phase of the reaction medium, said organic phase containing an alkyltetrazene of formula (I); and isolation of said alkyltetrazene of formula (I).
