Abstract

An effluent is treated by electrocoagulation in a cell which is divided into compartments (2a to 2f), each containing an anode (7) and cathode (8) linked to a source of current (9 and 10) with intermediate electrodes (11) between them which are not linked to a source of current.

Description

The invention relates to an electrocoagulation cell intended for the electrolytic treatment of effluents and in particular their detoxification.

The detoxification of effluents is generally carried out by physico-chemical and / or chemical techniques or even by the electrolysis technique.

An electrocoagulation cell generally comprises a plurality of electrodes in the form of plates, each electrode being connected to a current source. Some of these electrodes can also be bipolar, each face having a defined polarity which is opposite to that of the other face.

A number of bipolar or non-bipolar, so-called intermediate, electrodes are generally placed between two conventional electrodes, anode and cathode respectively.

It is known that the dissolution of the electrodes follows the law of
Faraday and that said dissolution is proportional to the intensity of the current used.

This dissolution obviously has the drawback of forming residual sludge and it is therefore advantageous for the same power to reduce the intensity by increasing the voltage.

For this purpose the inventor has imagined an entirely original electrocoagulation cell which is remarkable in that between the anode and the cathode is arranged at least one intermediate electrode not connected to a current source.

It is quite surprising that the intermediate electrode or electrodes can thus be unconnected while performing their role of electrode.

Such an arrangement makes it possible to operate the high voltage and low amperage cell so as to provide the advantages mentioned above.

According to one embodiment, the cell comprises several compartments with inclined bottoms and arranged in series, each provided with an anode, a cathode and at least one intermediate electrode, the electrodes being arranged perpendicular to the direction of flow of the effluent to be treated while two contiguous compartments are separated from each other by an overflow separator.

In this case, for example, the overflow separator comprises two parallel partitions, the downstream partition being disposed at a distance from the bottom of the cell in order to direct the effluent between the partitions from top to bottom after overflow above the upstream partition of the separator then from bottom to top in each compartment.

According to a more particular embodiment, at least some of the intermediate electrodes each consist of a basket with perforated walls filled with metal pieces.

In this case, for example, at least one of the walls of at least one of the basket-shaped electrodes is provided with a mask intended to regulate the oxygen-hydrogen proportion.

The invention will of course be understood on reading the description which follows and which refers to the accompanying drawings in which
FIG. 1 shows in perspective and schematically a cell according to the invention,
FIG. 2 is a schematic view from above of a cell of the type of that of FIG. 1,
FIG. 3 is a cross section of another cell according to the invention,
- Figure 4 shows a particular embodiment of the intermediate electrode according to the invention.

The drawings show an electrocoagulation cell which comprises a housing 1 in which are mounted a plurality of electrodes, arranged perpendicular to the direction of flow of the effluents to be treated, and which will be discussed in more detail below.

The embodiments of Figures 1, 2 and 3 respectively are very similar and therefore bear the same references.

In fact, the cells shown have several compartments of electrodes, for example two compartments 2a-2b in FIGS. 1 and 2, and six compartments 2a-2f in FIG. 3. A cell could of course have only one compartment.

The bottom of the shell 1 has an inclined bottom 3 (Figures 1 and 3), while the effluents arrive in the shell 1 on the side where the latter has the highest part of the inclined bottom 3 as shown by the arrows F in the figures 1 and 3, the effluents being discharged in the lower part and more precisely in 4 (Figures 1 to 3).

Two contiguous compartments are separated from each other by an overflow separator 5b (FIG. 1) or 5b-5f (FIG. 3), a separator 5a being further provided upstream of the first compartment 2a, to channel the arrival of effluents or even possibly downstream like the separator 5c in FIG. 2. The last downstream partition is further followed in the effluent discharge zone of a chamber 6.

As clearly shown in the drawings and in particular in FIG. 3, each separator is formed by two parallel partitions, the downstream partition being arranged at a distance from the bottom 3 of the cell, being possibly but not necessarily higher than the upstream partition so that the effluent circulates in the manner shown by the rounded arrows of said FIG. 3, that is to say from top to bottom between the two partitions of each separator after overflowing above the downstream partition, and from bottom to top in each compartment between two dividers.

In each compartment 2a-2f, there are therefore arranged electrodes, namely, an anode 7 (here upstream) and a cathode 8 (here downstream) referenced only in the first compartment 2a of Figures 1 to 3. But it is clear that each compartment has an anode and a cathode all connected to a direct current source as shown diagrammatically by the cables 9 (+) and 10 (-), in FIGS. 2 and 3.

Intermediate electrodes 11 are not provided between each anode-cathode pair 11 not connected to the current source, these electrodes nevertheless being bipolar (one polarity per side).

It is easily understood as already said that the effluent to be treated circulates in a zig-zag circuit in all the compartments, so as to be thus treated by the electrodes, a circuit 12 for evacuating residues being further provided.

The soluble or non-soluble electrodes are for example in the form of plates.

However, the invention proposes an entirely original intermediate electrode referenced 11 ′ in FIG. 4.

Such an electrode 11 ′ is in the form of a basket, for example of non-conductive material, which is provided with two opposite and perforated faces 13a, 13b, formed here of gratings shown in an incomplete manner for greater clarity.

In said basket and between the faces 13a, 13b are arranged pieces of metal, partially shown and shown diagrammatically at 14, of the iron or aluminum shavings type for example, thus offering a large active surface.

In order, for example, to produce more or less oxygen or hydrogen, the cathode (or anode) face 13a, 13b can be provided with a mask arranged to obscure at least part of the surface of said face, for example the lower part to the dashed line 15 in FIG. 4.

Other arrangements of the cell are obviously provided or imaginable without departing from the scope of the invention such as an air intake circuit for the evacuation of sludge etc.
