Abstract

The implant cup (5) is hemispherical in shape, with an inner cavity to receive an insert. It is fitted in the acetabulum by impaction and has, to this end, a series of anchoring projections (15) on its outer surface, created by two spiral grooves (38) with opposite pitches. The grooves intersect one another over a large proportion of the cup's outer face and are inclined towards its open end. They also increase in depth in the same direction. The are inclined at an angle of some 45 deg to the cup's open end and the anchoring projections formed by them have asymmetrical edges and a cross section in the shape of an eagle's beak, i.e. with a sharp tip which is slightly curved towards the open end of the cup. The projections are spaced evenly over the cup's outer surface, reducing progressively in size towards its polar zone. In addition, the cup can have an outer coating which promotes osteo-integration, especially of calcium hydroxyapatite.
