Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a novel aqueous paint composition, in particular for recreational use and to be applied with the fingers, based on polyvinyl alcohols, a crosslinking agent and a dye. It also relates to a process for preparing such compositions.
Finger paints are known and are often made from cellulose or acrylic polymer. These paints are generally intended for young children and they spread with the fingers but have the disadvantage of being very messy because they stick a lot to the hands.
Paint compositions particularly suitable for use by children, which are non-toxic, solvent-free and which have excellent adhesiveness to wood, cardboard or foam foams, have already been described in document DE-A-29 35 019. polystyrene. In addition, they would not stick to the hands and would not be messy.
For this purpose, this document describes paints resulting from the crosslinking of a solution of polyvinyl alcohols with a solution of saturated borax in the presence of glycerol, water and optionally a dye.
According to the applicant's own experience, these paints are not sufficiently resistant to aging and are still too tacky towards the hands.
Also known are other toy pastes based on polyvinyl alcohols, such as those described in European patent application 504 016, but the compositions described are not particularly suitable for application as a paint since they are non-adhesive and relatively compact.
The aim of the present invention is to provide new compositions for painting which mainly have the particular feature of adhering to paper or to another support but of no longer sticking to the fingers at all.
Furthermore, these compositions exhibit other properties which make them particularly advantageous for use by children, in particular:
- non-messy character with respect to clothing,
- resistance to aging for several years,
- pleasant contact,
- excellent ductility,
- absence of organic solvent.
Other advantages associated with the present invention will become apparent during the description which follows.
Firstly, the invention relates to a paint composition, in particular for recreational use, based on polyvinyl alcohols, a crosslinking agent and a dye, characterized in that it comprises the mixture of a first partially or fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol with a viscosity of between 2.10-3 and 6.10-3 Pas and a second partially or fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol with a viscosity of between 13.10-3 and 30.10-3 Pa.s.
The Applicant has in fact unexpectedly found that the combination of two polswinyl alcohols of different viscosity made it possible to obtain a paint exhibiting the excellent properties indicated above, whereas the use of a single polyvinyl alcohol did not make it possible to achieve the same. result.
It will be recalled that polyvinyl alcohols are obtained indirectly from their esters, by hydrolysis.
In general, the reaction is deliberately stopped before complete hydrolysis and acetic radicals remain in the molecule, the proportion of which influences the properties of the polymer obtained, in particular its solubility.
The hydrolysis rate is the proportion of acetate radicals substituted by hydroxyl radicals. This rate is therefore 100% when the hydrolysis is complete. The hydrolysis rate is usually given in molecular proportion, but it is also possible to indicate the proportion by weight of polyvinyl alcohol in 100 grams of polyvinyl alcohol (the results are very different and can give rise to confusion).
In the present description, the hydrolysis rates are given in molecular proportion.
Polyvinyl alcohols are also characterized by their degree of condensation which mainly depends on that of polyvinyl acetate used as raw material. The determination of the degree of condensation being delicate and imprecise, it is generally replaced by the indication of the viscosity of a standard solution. This viscosity is all the higher as the degree of condensation is greater.
The viscosity is expressed in Pa.s of the aqueous solution of 4% by weight, measured at 20OC with a viscometer.
Although it is possible to use fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohols (the rate is 98 per 100% when the hydrolysis is said to be total), it has been found to be preferable to use partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohols, i.e. 'that is to say, the hydrolysis rate of which is between 80 and 94% by weight, it being understood that one of the polyvillyl alcohols can be completely hydrolyzed while the other polyvinyl alcohol can be partially hydrolyzed. It is preferable to use two partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohols.
Preferably, use will be made of a first polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of hydrolysis in molecule close to 88% and a viscosity of between 3.10-3 and 5.10-3 Pa.s, such as can be found commercially under the RHODOVIOL brand.
It was also found that it was advantageous to use a second polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of hydrolysis cn molecule close to 88% and a viscosity between 13.10-3 and 30.10-3 Pas, as can also be found. commercially under the brand RHODOVlOL
Of course, it can be a mixture of several first polyvinyl alcohols and several second polyvinyl alcohols.
Any crosslinking agent making it possible to obtain the composition according to the invention can be used. These are well known compounds.
The preferred crosslinking agent is sodium borate or borax, which has the chemical formula Na2B4. lOH2O
It is also possible to use a sodium borate having a lower degree of hydration even though in this case the processing may be more difficult.
In order to improve the properties of the composition, in particular its consistency and its aging, the latter advantageously comprises a preservative, a plasticizer and a mineral filler.
Mention may be made, among the preservatives, of methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and / or propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate.
Among the plasticizers, mention may be made of glycerol and / or propylene glycol.
Among the mineral fillers, mention may be made of mother-of-pearl.
Of course, this composition will contain one or more dyes depending on the desired shade.
According to an advantageous variant, the weight ratio between said first polyvinyl alcohol and said second polyvinyl alcohol is between 1 and 4, the water / total mixture of polyvinyl alcohols ratio is between 5 and 15 and the weight ratio between total polyvinyl alcohol and borax is between 2 and 5.
An aqueous paint composition which is particularly suitable in the context of the present invention and which comprises, in percentage by weight, is given below
- first polyvinyl alcohol la7.5

- waterq.sp100%
The invention also relates to a process for preparing an aqueous composition as has just been described above, characterized in that a hot solution of borax is prepared which is mixed with the polyvinyl alcohols in aqueous solution and optionally the other ingredients.
In order to increase the concentration of borax, it is necessary to dissolve the borax in hot water, preferably at a temperature greater than or equal to about 80OC.
The composition thus obtained can be packaged in a tube and retains its consistency for a very long time.
The child applies this paint with the fingers on a support such as paper or cardboard, on which for example a model has already been printed, and can with a knife or any other suitable means adapt the painted area to the predetermined one on the support. The surface of the diaper can be changed at will for a long enough time to allow the child to improve the pattern.
