Abstract
Process for modifying the cooling power of an aqueous solution of at least one water-soluble organic polymer which has a lower critical solubility temperature (LCST) with a view to its use for quenching metal alloys, characterised in that a water-soluble additive which modifies the said critical temperature is introduced into the said solution. To lower the LCST of the solution, an inorganic salt of an inorganic or organic acid is preferably employed as an additive in a concentration of between 0.1 and 200 grams per litre, this salt being chosen from the salts of alkali and alkaline-earth metals, including magnesium and zinc. To raise the LCST of the solution, a water-soluble organic derivative is added, in a concentration of between 0.1 and 200 grams per litre, chosen from aliphatic compounds containing at least one functional group chosen from alcohols, acids, aldehydes, amides and amines.
