Abstract

The invention relates to a method for manufacturing lost (consumable, disposable) patterns, without shrinkage, which can be used in foundry work. It consists in compressing, inside a pattern box, balls of alveolar or expanded plastic material, and then in injecting a thermoplastic binder therein at a suitable temperature and pressure. The balance which is established, upon cooling, between the contraction of the binder and the swelling of the balls, on the one hand, and the coating of each ball with a film of binder, which opposes physico-chemical exchanges with the outside environment, on the other hand, contribute to eliminating shrinkage of the pattern.

Description

The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing lost models without shrinkage for the foundry, as well as to the models obtained by implementing said process.

Lost model or consumable model molding is a foundry technique using models that disappear during their first use. Depending on whether the disappearance is made by fusion, dissolution, combustion or sublimation, the lost models are said to be fusible, soluble, combustible or gasifiable. The materials most commonly used for the production of such models are wax, urea, polystyrene.

Up to now, the use of the materials used has not made it possible to avoid a contraction of the model, called shrinkage, during demolding. The withdrawal is instantaneous or progressive depending on whether it accompanies a temperature variation or whether it occurs independently of the temperature. The first case is that of wax, during its cooling. The second case is that of expanded polystyrene, during its physico-chemical stabilization.

The object of the invention is to obtain, by an economical manufacturing process, lost models with a volume of 0.1 to 100 dm3, sufficiently solid to possibly support a refractory shell, and having no dimensional variations, neither immediately after demolding, nor over time.

The present invention consists in compressing, inside a model box whose temperature is adapted to the operating cycle, beads of cellular or expanded plastic material, such as in particular expanded polystyrene, then injecting therein at a temperature and under suitable pressure a thermoplastic binder, such as in particular wax.

According to a characteristic of the invention, the proportion by volume of binder used is low, since the latter is mainly pushed back against the internal walls of the model box, as well as outside of this box by an orifice. appropriate, under the action of compressed balls which tend to regain their initial volume.

According to another characteristic of the invention, the balance which is established on cooling between the contraction of the binder and the swelling of the Zilles eliminates the instantaneous withdrawal of the model, which can be described as prestressed.

According to yet another characteristic of the invention, the coating of each plastic ball with an impermeable binder film eliminates, at the same time as any physico-chemical exchange with the external environment, the gradual withdrawal of the model.

The present invention also relates to the models obtained by implementing the above method.
