Description
VARIOUS PREMISES AND SPEAKERS
The invention relates to a product for absorbing and degrading volatile organic substances present in an atmosphere. It allows the destruction of odors. This inorganic, non-flammable, simple product, of low cost price and with a broad spectrum of action is defined in the present invention.
The agent transforming the volatile compounds is a permanganate fixed on a support which does not absorb water.
This support is
- either inert with respect to volatile compounds, the only action of the product then being oxidation (perlite for example)
- either adsorbing volatile products, the action then being double, adsorption then oxidation, which increases the product's efficiency (diatomaceous earth: diatoms)
The search for the best support-permanganate proportions has made it possible to propose the following values, potassium support-permanganate, for example, by weight
1/1 in the case of inert supports against ethylene
2/1 in the case of ethylene-absorbing products.
Another originality of the invention lies in the maintenance in the product of a humidity level compatible with the oxidation reaction. This is particularly important because if no precautions are taken, the product dries out quickly and becomes ineffective. Adding hygroscopic salts such as calcium chloride to the product avoids this drawback. By way of example, an experiment relating to the determination of the quantity of Ca C12 to be added, has shown that the best results are obtained with values of
- 0.5 g to 0.75 g for 1 g of inert support with respect to ethylene
- 0.5 g to 1 g for 5 g of support adsorbing etylene.
The most advantageous procedure consists in putting the hygroscopic salt in solution, then in gradually incorporating this solution into the support-permanganate mixture.
The products obtained can be either used as they are or dried at a temperature between 40 and 600 C. The dry products, placed in contact with humid air will spontaneously rehydrate to a water content compatible with the reaction of oxidation.
These products can be used in several ways
- during static use, the product placed in a breathable bag, fixes the volatile compounds passing through the bag
- during use in air circulation, the product is placed, in bulk or in bed, in a column through which the air charged with volatile compounds is pulsed, this device allows the treatment of volumes
much larger gases.
For example, Figure 1 shows the efficiency at 25 C of 500 mg of product produced with the adsorbent support placed under static conditions (perforated polyester sachet) in a 500 ml plasma flask in which were placed volatile compounds Onconstate that the contents of various compounds chosen from alcohols (butanol), aldehydes (hexanal) and esters (isoan acetate) decrease rapidly in the absence of air renewal.
La teneur en hexanal de celle-ci est considérablement diminuée en quelques minutes à 4 C. Figure 2 similarly shows the effectiveness of 20 g of product produced with the adsorbent support placed under conditions of circulation of the atmosphere flow rate 100 mi per minute -, in a 19-liter enclosure. The hexanal content thereof is considerably reduced in a few minutes at 4 C.
When passing to 250, the effect obtained is remarkable since the hexanal content increases considerably in the control enclosure, while it remains practically identical in the presence of the product, demonstrating the action of the latter.
The fields in which the present invention can be successfully applied are, for example, the elimination of odors in premises used for living, working or transport: tobacco odors, emanations of chemicals (sulfur dioxide. ..), septic tank odors, nauseating odors of putrefaction of living matter (plants for the treatment of animal or plant products, premises in the vicinity of fermentation tanks ...)
