Abstract

A stiffening brace for the blade of a propeller, partic. an agitating propeller for a mixer. The brace is made with continuous surfaces which form natural extensions of the effective surfaces of the blade itself. During rotation of the propeller the brace surfaces exert an axial thrust in the fluid in which a similar axial thrust is exerted by the propeller. The joint between the brace and the blade is pref. covered with a profiled e.g. radiused trim plate. Alternatively, the joint between the brace and the blade is by spot connection(s) only. Spot connections are pref. spaced by cut-outs in the brace or/and in the blade. Several propellers spaced along the same rotary shaft pref. support each other via intermediate braces which are formed to assist the axial thrust of the propellers. Used for stiffening the blades of helicopters and ship propellers giving max. propeller thrust for min. bulk wt. and cost.
