Abstract

A double-ended hypodermic needle forming part of a syringe for self-injection, has a central boss fixed to it. This has an external thread and >=1 groove at its forward end. The boss screws into the neck of a tubular body forming the syringe through which the rear section of the needle extends almost into contact with an end wall sepg. the tube holding the needle from the medicament contained in the ampoule, the neck of which is fixed on to the syringe. A protective sheath fits over the front end of the needle and the boss, and the sheath can be turned to screw the needle boss farther into the syringe so that the rear point of the needle pierces the back wall and enters the ampoule, before it is removed to expose the front tip of the needle. Absolute sterility of the needle is thus ensured.
