Abstract

Tubing comprising a metallic sheath bonded to an internal plastic lining is made by continuously forming metal strip around a mandrel which acts as a die for concurrent extrusion of the lining. Pref. the tube is made from annealed aluminium or tinned steel, with a helical or longitudinal joint made by ultrasonic welding or tin soldering respectively. Used for mfr. of tubing for distributing cold or hot (=100 degrees C.) water for e.g. domestic use (pressure up to 10 kg./cm.2). The metallic sheet prevents radial creep at elevated temps. The plastic lining protects the metallic sheath from internal corrosion. Good interfacial adhesion allows the composite pipe to be bent or formed without creasing.
