Abstract
Inhomogeneous armour plate is claimed whose exposed surface is subject to impact of missiles and/or to explosion of charges which exert upon that surface a predetermined percussion pressure which is propagated, as shock wave, as far as the other side. The component material of the prod. has an acoustic impedance that decreases from the exposed ("front") side to the rear in such a way that the amplitude of the thurst wave generated by the shock wave being reflected at the rear, lies below the dynamic breaking strength of the material. Pref. the 'front' side consists of steel and there is an intermediate layer of sintered steel. Alternatively there are intermediate layers consisting, in sequence from the front layer, of Sn, Ti, Al and Mg. There is no tendency to delamination and splinting at rear surface as is common with prior-art similar prods. even when there is no penetration by a missile.
