Abstract

Oil is transported is stages from an underwater offshore oil well to the coast. The oil is initially delivered to a floating buffer vessel from which it is transferred via a flexible pipeline to a tanker which travels to and from between the buffer vessel and the coast. The buffer vessel is pref. equipped with a fixed distribution head by means of which the oil collected in the vessel is discharged into the flexible hose. To enable the hose to be extended and retracted. It runs around a guide disc mounted on rails so that the movement of the disc along the axis of the ship enables the discharge end of the hose to be drawn out to the transport vessel. The buffer vessel is pref. moored to a column with its foot on the seabed, a swivelling fluid coupling on the surface and a distance buoy enable the vessel to be moored and connected to the fluid coupling via another flexible pipe. The arrangement is such that the buffer vessel is able to adopt the position which offers the least resistance to driving seas or sind and, if necessary, use may be made of dynamic positioning on the vessel itself to limit the force exerted on the mooring device. The collection and transfer system offers a cheaper alternative to the construction of an underwater pipeline.
