Abstract

Parent patent describes an outdoor candle or flammable torch, partic. for anti-frost protection of vines, early vegetables, fruit trees etc. The candle has a slow-burning body made of a mixt. of cellulosic material impregnated with a combustible substance such as paraffin. A pellet of pyrotechnic material is fixed to the body to facilitate ignition. In this addn. the combustible substance with which the body is impregnated is a fat or oil of animal, vegetable or mineral origin. Intended as an illumination torch, the body is now pref. made of a rigid material e.g. wood. The pellet of pyrotechnic material is at one end of the torch and has a slow-burning wick extending from the pellet. To facilitate laying a number of candles in a vineyard or orchard, e.g. from a tractor, candles can be linked together by a quick burning wick extending continuously to all pyrotechnic pellets in turn. The continuous wick pref. runs parallel to a back up cable or cord which prevents excessive tension being applied to the continuous wick. Ignition can be set off automatically by a temp. sensitive electric switch. Cheaper fats and oils than paraffin reduce the price of the candles. Wood bodies make inexpensive lighting torches which are brilliant and long-lasting. Large areas can be covered rapidly by using 100 or more linked candles.
