Abstract
A machine for driving a hypodermic needle through a solid body, such as muscle or bone, comprises a holder which can apply a combination of rotary and reciprocating motions to the needle. Pref. the two motions are adjustable independently. The rotary movement is restricted to 45-90 degrees; the reciprocation typically of about 0.2mm amplitude. The combination of rotary and percussive motions provides effective penetration without undue force or prior drilling, and the risk of blockage is minimal. Pref. the needle is connected to its reservoir by Teflon (PTFE) tubing, to suppress transfer of ultrasonic vibrations to the syringe body. Suitable for administering e.g. dental anaesthetics.
