Abstract
Platform is of the type having several vertical tubular flotation legs, of which >=3 have their axes approximately on the surface of the same cylinder. A working deck is mounted on the upper ends of the legs. Horizontal flotation chambers connect the lower ends of adjacent legs, and a network of cross-struts links the underside of the deck to the legs. The deck is made up of cross-members orthogonally arranged to define unit squares and/or rectangles equal to half or double a unit square. Each of the legs, together with the central tube, is located within one of the unit squares. The central tube has its axis coincident with that of the cylinder and opens at one end on the upper surface of the deck and at the other end level with the lower ends of the legs. At >=3 of the legs are connected to the central tube by radial tubular horizontal flotation chambers. The rigidity and floating stability of the platform are greater than with conventional designs, and the tractive forces on the anchoring cables are reduced for the same degree of anchoring stability. The central tube not only contributes to these advantages, but also serves to protect different components passed down the tube into the sea from the deleterious effects of the waves. Drill-pipes, protecting drill strings, may pass through the central tube.
