Abstract
The silencer for an internal combustion engine is formed from a Y shaped tubular member (14) which connects the exhaust manifold (2, 3, 4, 5) to the exhaust pipe (10). Each branch of the Y has a number of diaphragms (20) with a central hole (18). These diaphragms form a series of resonators which damp out very high frequency noise which is generated when the engine accelerates. The diaphragms are formed from discs with either plain or flanged edges welded to the inner surfaces of the pipe. An alternative design forms the resonating chambers by making deep circumferential corrugations.
