Abstract

A conventional spark plug is modified so a more uniform combustion of fuel air mixture is obtained. The modification comprises a refractory alloy wire loop bridging the spark electrodes. The thin (tenths of a millimeter diameter) wire (F) is formed from Inconel, Nichrome or similar high temperature metal alloy and is fixed (E) to the threaded metal base (6) of the spark plug (1). The wire is bent into a loop which bridges the earth electrode (5). The wire has low thermal inertia and rapidly heats to red heat during running of the engine, enhancing the ionisation of the space round the spark gap, and thus improving spark conduction and fuel combustion.
