Abstract
Description
The object of the present invention is to reduce the fuel consumption of internal combustion engines, in particular internal combustion engines, especially at low idle and accelerating speeds as well as at start-up in cold weather, thereby correspondingly increasing engine performance and efficiency.
This object is achieved thanks to an improvement brought to the lighting conditions by means of an attached accessory member which is at the same time simple, light, durable and inexpensive, and this accessory member also requiring for its installation no modification of the structure or manufacturing of the motors or any special tools which can swiait without any difficulty to existing motors. From the observations made by the Applicant, it would appear that the intended benefits would result from a certain lengthening of the duration of the ignition phase during the combustion cycle.
In accordance with the process of the present inventian, a thin filament of refractory alloy suitable for being brought to high temperature by the hot gases generated from the initiation of the combustion cycle is exposed within the combustion chamber, the filament thus heated then contributing by itself and in turn upon ignition of the fuel previously triggered. This filament, a few tenths of a millimeter in diameter, will advantageously have low thermal inertia in order to be able to reach the ignition temperature almost instantaneously and remain red hot without damage.
The present invention also has for ob3et an improved spark plug of conventional constitution and standardized dimensions, but whose head or internal extréilté carrying the electrodes is equipped in addition to a certain length of said filament, preferably under a loop protruding from said head and jambing said electrodes without disturbing their production of sparks.
The description which follows with reference to the appended drawings, given by way of nonlimiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be made,
Figures 1 and 2 are schematic perspective views of a spark plug, respectively illustrating two alternative embodiments of the filament which is the subject of the present invention.
There is shown in the drawing a spark plug 1 of the current type having at its internal end or tette 2, as usual, the projecting end of the axial electrode 3 surrounded by the insulator 4 and the electrode in corbelling 5 integral with the threaded metal sheeting 6 of the spark plug, a small annular cup 7 being formed between the insulator 4 and the spark plug body 6.
According to the present invention, a loop of a filament F, for example made of a refractory alloy known as "Inconel", "Inox 304" or "Nichrome", from about two tenths to ten is adapted to this plug 2 plug. tenths of a millimeter in diameter, this loop projecting about 8 millimeters from the spark plug cap 2 and forming an arch which spans the spark gap 3-5.
In the embodiment of FIG. 1, this loop of filament F is fixed directly, for example by welding its folded ends E-E, at the end of the metal body 6 of the spark plug 7 of which it therefore forms an integral part.
As a variant and as shown in FIG. 2, the filament loop F is separate from the spark plug body 6.
Here it is integral with a split ring B forming a spring and capable of being housed in the annular bowl 7 against the wall of which it comes to bear firmly by the effect of its elasticity.
It goes without saying that the embodiments described are only examples and that they could be modified, in particular by substitution of technical equivalents, without departing from the scope of the invention for this. It could thus between advantageous to preheat the filament. F by the Joule effect by passing it through an electric current, so that it is at the start at a temperature not too far from the ignition temperature, the hot gases from the start of the combustion cycle then providing the necessary additional heating . Of course, the filament F will then have to be suitably insulated and connected to an electrical source.
