Abstract

Solid fuels produced from combustible waste material (esp. sawdust) have an expanded microcellular structure in which each cell contains a combustion-supporting or -promoting gas mixt. (esp. air). The fuels are produced by mixing sawdust with particulate additives and water, extruding the resulting paste in a heated screw extruder, and dividing the extrudate into sections of desired length. The additives include (a) a blowing agent such as NaHCO3, paraffin wax or polyurethane, (b) a binder such as bone glue or molasses, and opt. (c) an additional binder comprising plastics (esp. polypropylene) scraps. The prod. pref. contains 85-95% sawdust and 5-15% additives. The fuels burn cleanly and completely and can be stored and transported without special precautions or equipment.
