Abstract

On the floating roof of a storage tank for hydrocarbons, a continuous feeder rail is fixed close to the edge and is provided with nozzles for projecting a fire fighting fluid. The rail is connected to carboys contg. the extinguishing fluid, and in the automatic fire fighting installation, means are provided for commanding the simultaneous feeding of the rail from the carboys, if the temp. exceeds a predetermined threshold. Pref. the installation includes pipework connected to at least one reservoir of a gas such as N2 under pressure. The pipework is connected to the carboys, and the reservoir is shut off by equipment which can connect it to the pipework when the temp. threshold has been overstepped. The connection between the carboys and the feeder rail is closed by equipment which is opened by the pressure of the released N2. The pipework is also connected to a warning system.
