Abstract

A thermal transfer printing process comprises (a) applying on a temporary sheet a layer of a compsn. contg. a diazonium salt, a coupling agent and a coupling catalyst; (b) imagewise exposing the layer to light to destroy the salt in the exposed zones; (c) applying the irradiated layer supported by the sheet on the surface to be printed; (d) applying heat and pressure to the assembly to catalyse the coupling reaction between the diazonium salt and the coupling agent and to transfer the developed image onto the surface and (e) detaching the sheet from the surface. The process can be easily carried out and is applicable to most substrates, partic. textiles. Prints can be mono- or polychromes, esp. trichromes.
