Abstract

Minerals with impurities surrounding the grains are fed continuously into a closed container into which water is introduced at the bottom through a perforated pipe, and then flows upwards through the container. Ultra-sonic waves are transmitted through the mineral-water mixt. by transducer immersed in the mixt. mounted vertically or on spiral formation on a rotating shaft set on the axis of the container. The transducer can also be in the form of a single vertical cylindrical crown. Ultra-sonic waves which have a power in the order of 1 watt/cm2 pass horizontally through the mixt. Pure mineral is extd. at the bottom of the container and the water overflows into a channel near the top of the container from where it is pumped away. The water is de-gassed by continuously evacuating an air space above the level of the mineral/water mixt. at the top of the container. Alternatively the water can be de-gassed before it is pumped to the container. The process is used in the continuous purificn. of granular minerals, esp. quartz sands, and is purely physical, as opposed to the messy chemical processes generally used.
