Abstract

A single rotating shaft is supported on four bearings (7, 8, 9) and (10) which are in line. The shaft may carry impellers in between the bearings. Each bearing is supported on three pads. Each pad is located by means of hydraulic fluid supplied under pressure to the back of the pad. The upper pads are connected together and to an accumulator (24). The lower pads are connected in pairs to accumulators (15 and 21). Control elements (19) regulate the pressure on the pads to ensure that the bearings are kept in line to give equal support to the shaft at each bearing.
