Abstract

A calcination furnace has a cylindrical part at one end with a tangential entry for particles of material for treatment in suspension in a gas stream, and an outlet at the other end. The sectional area of the outlet is less than that of the cylindrical part and the outlet is at the end of a part progressively decreasing in cross-sectional area. There is an inlet for combustible in the cylindrical part. The part progressively decreasing in area incorporates a section of a pyramid with its large end connected to the circular section of the furnace by a conical section. There are injectors for combustible near the angles of the pyramidal part and near to the place where the pyramidal part is connected to the conical part. The small end of the pyramidal part is connected by a flared part to an outlet duct. Arrangement prevents the formation of hot points where there is a risk of incipient fusion which could cause the particles to agglomerate and deposit on the walls.
