Abstract

The high temperature shaft seal cooling system uses air which is circulated through the annular spaces formed by two sleeves mounted on the shaft. The air enters the system through a radial passage and flows along the space between the sleeves on the underside of the seal. The return flow is through the space between the inner sleeve and the shaft, the exit air flow being through a second radial passage. Air bled off from the inlet flow is circulated round the outside of the seal, and leaves by a third radial passage. The inlet passage is located between the two outlet passages.
