Abstract

The LASH ship has a through hold into which the lighters are floated and in which they remain floating during the trip. The lighters are secured on the sides of the hold and help in the buoyancy of the ship. If the ship is partially filled with lighters then the water level in the hold can cause large waves and subsequent instability. This is prevented by a series of movable bulkheads (41) which are dropped down into transverse settings across the floor of the hold to divide up the empty sections. The bulkheads are raised and pivoted into horizontal settings to allow the lighters to float out.
