Abstract

A method of heating gas by mixing a gas which is to be heated with the plasma jet of an intermediate gas heat carrier consists of mixing the gas to be heated with the inter. gas heat carrier and also providing additional heat by means of a revolving electric arc. In one preferred embodiment, the plasma jet is produced by heating the inter. gas heat carrier by means of an electric arc which is in series with the revolving electric arc. In another embodiment, a single electric arc is used, part of which is generally axial and heats the plasma gas while the end is curved to constitute the revolving portion. The arc may be caused to revolve by blowing by means of a rotation imparted to the intermediate gas heat carrier. Alternatively, it may be caused to revolve by a magnetic field, or again by a combination of both methods. Used in particular for heating chemically reacting, ionised gases, for example in the production of low olefins and industrial hydrogen from hydrocarbons as the starting material. By causing the arc to rotate, as opposed to using a fixed arc and a highly rotating gas flow, uniform heating right across the gas flow and uniform ionisation is obtained. As a result, the residue of unconverted gas is considerably reduced and the wastage of heat is much less.
