Abstract

A baling press for paper, cloth, refuse etc., has a vertical frame (10) with a baling compartment at the bottom, and a pressure plate (4) which is forced vertically downwards to compress the charge in the compartment. The bale is released after pressure, by opening latches at top and bottom of two adjacent doors forming two sides of the compartment. The pressure plate is mounted at the bottom of a set of parallel vertical screws, which when rotated, act in the manner of a screw and nut drive. Each screw is integral with a toothed wheel at its top, and a chain passes around the four toothed wheels so as to rotate them and the screws synchronously. This chain is tensioned into a figure of eight around the four wheels and a tensioning wheel and a drive wheel, the latter being rotated by a drive motor.
